A major client of ours in the pharmaceutical industry has a need for an EHS Associate Director. This position is onsite in Central Islip.
The EHS Associate Director, drives the enterprise-wide strategies for the environmental and occupational health and safety agenda across the organization. This role serves as a subject matter expert (SME) in ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, designing and implementing effective safety measures and mitigation plans to minimize the risks to employees, patients, products, and property.
Responsibilities
- Serves as a subject matter expert in the areas of environmental, health, and safety specialization; lead technical meetings and interact with internal and external customers.
- Directly supervises and provides guidance and development to individual contributors, including contractors and matrixed staff, external to the organization.
- Overall responsibility for the department budget, expenses, and spending.
- Develops, implements, audits, evaluates programs, policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance with the appropriate federal statutes and regulations, and that environmental, health, and safety requirements are met.
- Interprets federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and orders as they apply to workplace safety and environmental compliance.
- Ensures that inspections are conducted, corrective actions are completed on time, and all necessary documentation is kept on file.
- Represent the Company in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections and audits and in any activities that may result such as citations and violations.
- Maintains policies, procedures, and plans to ensure the overall continuity of business operations, safety and security preparedness of employees, property, products, and other assets in the event of a crisis, emergency, or disaster.
- Manage Worker's Compensation Program and Occupational Health
- May represent the Company to internal and external sources such as the media, community leaders and organizations, elected officials, and regulatory agents.
- Identifies hazardous workplace conditions and takes immediate remedial action to remove hazards or risks.
- Investigates and reports accidents and workplace incidents involving injuries and other serious situations.
- Investigates and addresses concerns, questions, or compliances received within the Company, community, customers, government regulatory bodies, and other agencies.
- Development of Environmental Protection risk management strategies, directives, standards and best practices related to Chemicals, Air, Water and Soil in support of new drug approval submission process, environmental compliance and permitting, due diligence and risk management. This includes, but is not limited to, Environmental Risk Assessments, Due Diligence. Global Packaging/Shipping Standards, Waste Disposal, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Regulatory requirements matrix, Permit Management, Sustainability/Green Initiatives
- Communicates and proactively addresses the requirements of new regulations and best practices in order to create a proactive approach to EHS through cross-functional co-operation, communications and training.
- Leads the development, communication, and training on relevant EHS programs, processes, best practices, tools and templates that may be leveraged by site management in its efforts to ensure compliance and promote the right behaviors and awareness.
- Ensures appropriate resources are available to protect employees such as personal protective equipment (PPE), training, and work procedures and guidance.
- Compliance with companies Global EHS guidelines and drive actions to meet site's EHS goals / targets as per the set scorecard
- 10 years of direct experience working in EHS within manufacturing and/or biotech, research and development (R&D) facilities. 5 years of directly supervising safety staff.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Pharmaceutical Sciences or other related fields of study from an accredited institution. Master's degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field of study preferred.
- Certifications in safety such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Safety Management Specialist (SMS) preferred.
- Must have direct knowledge and experience interfacing and representing companies to U.S. OSHA, EPA, FDA and other regulatory bodies at the federal, state, and local levels with proven track record of addressing audit findings.
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing experience is highly preferred.
- Experience supervising direct reports/EHS personnel, managing department budgets and other financial expenditures.
Behavioral Competencies and Technical Skills
- Expert-level knowledge of Environmental Protection regulations, Safety, Product Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Emergency Response regarding manufacturing and R&D environments.
- Must possess excellent presentation skills, strong documentation and technical writing skills, and able to apply relevant scientific principles and practices.
- Strong command over written and verbal English is a must.
- Must be able to communicate both technical and non-technical information clearly and concisely across all levels of the organization from executive leadership suite to employees working on the shop floor. This includes safety training, briefings and conducting technical meetings.
- Must be able to work under minimal supervision as a leader of the function and exercise appropriate professional judgement.
- Must be proficient in computer skills and software applications such as Microsoft Office tools.
- Strategic orientation and possess sound judgment.
- Use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problem solving.
- Determines functional strategy in alignment with organizational objectives and priorities.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of business needs, with the ability to establish and maintain a high level of customer trust, confidence and ability to manage client expectations.
- Able to effectively and intelligently represent the Company to internal and external contracts
- Effectively collaborates and interacts with other managers at the same level and members of the Site Leadership Team regarding pertinent business matters and actions.
