Fabricator
Shift: Monday - Thursday; 5am - 3pm

A fabricator's job is to create finished products from raw materials by cutting, shaping, and assembling parts using welding/joining processes including MIG and TIG processes. This role involves interpreting blueprints, assembly, and performing and recording quality checks to ensure products meet specifications. Responsibilities may also involve development of production aids and fixtures to facilitate assembly.

Key responsibilities

  • Interpreting plans: Reading and understanding blueprints, schematics, and other project specifications to understand customer requirements. Ability to use and understand both metric and imperial units of measure.
  • Material preparation: Selecting appropriate raw materials and marking them for cutting or shaping.
  • Shaping and cutting: Using specialized tools like saws, grinders, torches, rolls and presses to cut and shape materials with precision.
  • Assembly: Joining parts together to form a finished product.
  • Quality control: Inspecting the final product to ensure it meets all quality and safety standards and specifications. This also includes the use of measuring instruments including scale, rule, tape measure (metric and standard), level, protractor, etc.
  • Equipment maintenance: Performing routine maintenance and repairs on the tools and machinery used in the fabrication process.
  • Safety adherence: Following all safety guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
Essential skills
  • Ability to perform industrial math calculations. Shop math proficiency with fractions, decimals, metric/imperial units and geometry.
  • Dexterity and precision: The ability to perform detailed and precise work with welding equipment, hand and power tools.
  • Technical knowledge: A working knowledge of design, materials, welding processes, and fabrication equipment.
  • Reading comprehension: The ability to comprehend and follow complex instructions from blueprints and specifications.
  • Problem-solving: The ability to troubleshoot issues and ensure products function correctly.
  • Collaboration: The ability to work effectively with other team members.
  • Mark/identify parts as needed/appropriate, including part number, serial number, etc.
  • Working knowledge (familiarity and safe operation) of welders, torches, power tools, plasma cutters, positioners, drill press, etc.
  • Physical stamina: The ability to stand for long periods and lift heavy items is essential. Typical workdays may exceed 8 hours.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, job cranes, and overhead cranes to move and position material.
