A raw material strategic purchasing job description involves developing and executing sourcing strategies to acquire raw materials at the optimal cost, quality, and delivery terms. This includes managing supplier relationships, analyzing market trends, and mitigating supply chain risks.
Key responsibilities
Identify, evaluate, and qualify new and potential suppliers to expand and diversify the supplier base.
Lead the sourcing process, including requests for proposal, information or quote & order placement while ensuring activities comply with company policies & procedures.
Negotiate long-term contracts and other agreements with suppliers to secure favorable pricing, terms and conditions.
Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with key suppliers to foster innovation and ensure supply chain stability.
Resolve supplier issues related to quality, delivery and service.
Drive cost-reduction initiatives without compromising quality or supply reliability.
Develop and implement strategies to minimize risk associated with supply shortages, price volatility and other potential disruptions.
Work closely & communicate effectively with internal stakeholders & suppliers to understand material needs and align sourcing strategies.

Education and experience
Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration or a related field. An MBA is often a plus.
Relevant experience in a procurement, purchasing, or strategic sourcing role, often 3-7 years depending on the seniority.
Experience with specific raw materials relevant to the industry (e.g., metals, chemicals, ingredients) may be required.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and market trends.
