Summary of Responsibilities:
- Analyze and code medical charts across various service areas, including:
- Inpatient
- Ambulatory Surgery
- Cardiology
- Observation
- Interventional Radiology
- Emergency Medicine
- Clinics
- Nursing Homes
- Ensure proper use of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
- Assist physicians in selecting appropriate CPT codes, diagnoses, and modifiers for procedures performed.
- Analyze manually posted charge batches to ensure the accuracy of ICD-10-CM and CPT code assignments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Documentation and Coding:
- Analyze provider documentation to assign all diagnoses, procedures, modifiers, dates, and places of service according to billing and coding guidelines.
- Code and/or validate outpatient service areas, including diagnosis, E&M, and modifiers, maintaining productivity levels of 90-100 charts per day (no limit on the number of transactions filed).
- Code, edit, and/or validate inpatient, ASU, and surgical charts, ensuring the physician procedures match services performed (65 charts per day).
- Quality Assurance:
- Review assigned work queues to ensure all CPT and/or HCPCS codes are accurate based on physician documentation.
- Review Telemedicine Grids per insurance guidelines to ensure proper billing.
- Compliance and Guidelines:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all physician billing and coding guidelines.
- Apply full knowledge of coding guidelines, including:
- Initial vs. Subsequent
- New vs. Established
- Sick vs. Preventive
- Split Share and COVID-19
- Apply full knowledge of the National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) to review and resolve NCCI edits for Part B physician billing claims.
- Assistance and Communication:
- Assist physicians in assigning CPT codes that accurately reflect the treatment provided.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information per hospital policy.
- Other Responsibilities:
- Perform other related and assigned duties as required.
Education and Work Experience:
- Required:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Preferred:
- College Degree
- 2-5 years of relevant experience
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or
- Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCSP)
Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of company operating systems.
- Full knowledge of CPT and ICD-10-CM coding.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel).
- Ability to work under nominal supervision in an area where procedures are standardized but require independent decisions.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of billing guidelines.
- Ability to collaborate with all employment levels, including physicians.
- Ability to multitask effectively.
