Client Need: Temporary Excel Programmer – Manufacturing (Troy, NY)
Duration: Approx. 6 months (potential for shorter if project completes early)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, full-time, standard business hours (8am–5pm)
Location: Onsite preferred (Troy, NY); may consider hybrid work for the right candidate
Pay: $35-50/hr.
Overview:
Our client, a manufacturer of custom-engineered devices, is looking for a temporary programmer to revamp and automate a complex Excel-based estimating tool. Every product they sell is made to order, with slight but critical variations from project to project. Their current Excel spreadsheet is used in the bidding process to generate cost estimates for sales reps, but it's become overly manual, error-prone, and inefficient.
Project Goals:
- Redesign and automate the existing Excel estimating tool to better support quoting, pricing, and sales commissions.
- Enable users to input multiple line items while retaining historical data (current process loses information after inputting new lines).
- Build a more user-friendly front-facing interface that allows sales reps to enter project-specific details and generate accurate customer pricing.
- Introduce built-in flexibility to adjust material pricing with buffers (10–20%) as market costs fluctuate.
- Improve transparency in how material costs, list prices, outside purchases, and commissions are calculated.
- Ideally structure it to eventually pull pricing data from an ERP system, although integration is not required at the outset.
Technical Scope:
- Strong Excel programming experience required (VBA, macros, formulas, UI logic).
- Ability to understand and redesign legacy logic developed internally by the company's estimator.
- Must be able to ask the right questions, work independently, and develop a scalable solution.
- ERP integration is a longer-term consideration; current work will be independent of ERP.
Ideal Candidate:
- Experienced Excel programmer with prior exposure to pricing tools or estimating systems in a manufacturing or engineering context.
- Strong problem-solving and process improvement mindset.
- Able to work onsite in Troy, NY, and collaborate directly with in-house stakeholders.
