Building Engineer (Data Center)

Position Summary

The Data Center Building Engineer is responsible for providing maintenance and operational support across a data center facility and its campus. This role ensures the reliable operation of all mechanical, electrical, and environmental systems, while supporting both internal teams and third-party vendors on maintenance and project activities.

This position plays a critical role in maintaining uptime and performance standards in a high-availability environment. The Building Engineer operates on a 12-hour shift schedule, following a 4-days-on / 4-days-off rotation, and reports directly to the Facilities Manager.


Key Responsibilities

  • Receive direction and support from the Lead Building Engineer
  • Monitor and maintain critical infrastructure systems to ensure maximum uptime and performance
  • Perform routine inspections of facility systems and respond to operational issues as needed
  • Operate and maintain mechanical and electrical systems in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner
  • Learn and utilize building management and control systems for:
    • Chiller plants
    • HVAC systems
    • Cooling towers
    • Water systems
    • Fire/life safety systems
  • Provide hands-on maintenance support for mechanical and environmental systems, including recommending repairs and process improvements
  • Perform minor repairs and light construction work across:
    • Structural components
    • Plumbing systems
    • HVAC equipment
    • Electrical distribution systems
  • Coordinate and oversee work performed by third-party vendors and contractors
  • Assist with basic facility security responsibilities as needed
  • Safely operate ladders, lifts, and other access equipment; lift and carry materials up to 50 lbs

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience in electrical and mechanical systems within high-availability environments (e.g., data centers, manufacturing, healthcare facilities)
  • Technical degree preferred; equivalent hands-on experience will be considered

Experience & Knowledge

  • Familiarity with electric and pneumatic control systems
  • Working knowledge of safety practices and participation in safety programs and training
  • Experience assisting with the development and adherence to facility safety procedures
  • Military or technical service background is a plus
  • CFC (refrigeration) certification is a plus

    • Blueprints
    • Electrical schematics
    • Control ladder diagrams
    • Flow charts
  • ProfiBatesciencBatesy with testing and diagnostic equipment, including:
    • Volt/ohm meters
    • Alignment and balancing tools
    • Refrigerant leak detection systems
    • Refrigerant recovery units
  • Working knowledge of critical infrastructure systems, including:
    • Redundant UPS systems
    • Standby diesel generators
    • Chilled water systems
    • Automated building control systems and troubleshooting
