Job Description Welder Lead
While there is no single Lead Welder position at a prominent industrial wheel and caster manufacturer based in Gastonia, NC.
A Welding Lead is a "working lead" who balances hands-on production with supervisory duties. They are responsible for overseeing a crew of welders and fabricators to ensure production targets, quality standards, and safety protocols are met.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Supervise, coordinate, and assign daily tasks to a crew of welders and fabricators based on project needs.
- Hands-on Welding: Perform complex welding and fabrication tasks, often specializing in MIG, TIG, or arc welding on industrial caster components.
- Quality Control: Inspect final products against blueprints and specifications to ensure welds meet quality standards and are free of defects.
- Training & Mentorship: Coach and onboard new or junior welders, sharing best practices and reinforcing proper techniques.
- Operational Management: Monitor workflow, maintain inventory of welding supplies, and ensure equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.
- Safety Enforcement: Implement and enforce strict safety guidelines to minimize hazards in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Experience: Usually requires 5–10 years of professional welding and fabrication experience, with prior leadership or supervisory roles.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading blueprints, interpreting weld symbols, and using various precision measuring tools.
- Certifications: AWS (American Welding Society) or ASME certifications are often required or highly preferred.
- Soft Skills: Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities to act as a bridge between management and the shop floor.
