The Heavy Equipment Shop Manager is a working supervisor responsible for leading daily diesel shop operations while performing advanced diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on diesel trucks, heavy equipment, and machinery. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership, workflow coordination, and safety oversight to ensure reliable, compliant, and cost-effective equipment performance.
Key Responsibilities
Shop Leadership & Supervision

Lead and supervise daily activities of diesel technicians and helpers

Assign, schedule, and prioritize work orders based on safety, urgency, and operational impact

Promote a strong safety culture and enforce OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies

Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, and mentoring technicians

Monitor technician performance, productivity, and workmanship quality

Foster teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement
Service Operations & Workflow Management

Manage all maintenance and repair work orders through a CMMS or work order system

Track equipment status, downtime, labor hours, and repair history
-
Balance technician workloads to maximize efficiency and minimize overtime

Ensure accurate documentation of labor, parts usage, and repair notes

Coordinate parts ordering, inventory levels, and vendor service calls
-
Communicate with operations, dispatch, and project managers on repair timelines and equipment availability
Hands-On Technical Support

Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines, electrical, hydraulic, braking, and powertrain systems

Assist technicians with complex troubleshooting and root-cause analysis

Lead major repairs, component tear-downs, and rebuild inspections when required

Liaise with OEM service representatives for technical support and updates
Quality Control & Compliance

Inspect completed repairs to ensure accuracy, safety, and OEM compliance

Verify critical systems (brakes, hydraulics, safety components) before equipment is released

Conduct spot-checks on in-progress work to maintain quality standards

Ensure warranty repairs and inspections are documented per manufacturer requirements

Review work orders for completeness, clarity, and proper closeout
Safety, Facilities & Asset Management

Investigate and report safety incidents, equipment failures, or near misses

Ensure shop tools, lifts, diagnostic equipment, and assets are maintained and serviceable
Communication & Customer Service

Serve as the primary liaison between the shop and equipment operators or internal stakeholders

Receive service requests and gather accurate diagnostic information
-
Provide realistic repair timelines and communicate delays proactively
-
Address rework, concerns, or complaints professionally and efficiently
-
Recommend preventive maintenance strategies to reduce unplanned downtime
-
Communicate repair costs clearly and obtain approvals when required
