Job Summary:
The Machinist II position will set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. The role may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The Machinist II will check quality of work against blueprints and specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to produce metal parts.
• Review electronic or written blueprints for specifications and check accuracy of work against blueprints and specifications.
• Calculate where to cut or bore.
• Shape steel, aluminum, titanium, plastic, silicon and other materials.
• Determine how fast or slow workpiece is fed into machine and how much material to remove.
• Select tools and materials for the job. Plan the sequence of cutting and finishing operations.
• Mark the workpiece to show where cuts should be made. Position workpiece on the drill press, lathe, or milling machine.
• Monitor and control feed rate and speed
• Ensure work-piece is properly lubricated and/or cooled.
• Adjust cutting speed to compensate for harmonic vibrations.
Education and Experience (required):
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 4 years of machining experience.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (required):
• Ability to operate lathes, mills, and grinders
• Ability to machine complex, tight tolerance parts.
• Must be able to effectively thread on the lathe.
• Must be able to read Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols and interpret blueprints.
• Possess excellent shop math skills and own tools.
• Must be able to complete quality inspections on work product
• Must be ready and willing to complete all tasks assigned and work overtime and weekends as needed. Ability work with minimum of supervision.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (preferred):
• Ability to work with Anilam, Prototrak or similar controls on vertical mill.
• Skilled in automotive engine machining.
• Ability to work with prototype parts.
• Ability to work overtime as needed including weekends.
