Job Overview

The Line Mechanic is responsible for the troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance of tile plant machinery and auxiliary equipment under the direction of the maintenance supervisor or line supervisor. This role requires adherence to all safety policies, including lockout procedures, and involves assisting in training other mechanics. The mechanic must perform accurate and timely repairs, report needs to supervisors, and uphold the organization's vision, values, and objectives with integrity and respect for coworkers.

Essential Functions

  • Safety Compliance: Implement lockout procedures before any cleaning, maintenance, or repair work. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.
  • Follow checklist procedures and read downtime reports to conduct necessary repairs and adjustments.
  • Troubleshoot, identify problems, and perform proper repairs.
  • Remove, replace, and rebuild motors and parts.
  • Identify and repair or replace worn components (e.g., chains, sprockets, gearboxes, ropes, pulleys).
  • Maintain and repair all parts of the production line (e.g., tile machine, grouper, racker, cars, packager).
  • Clean the line prior to maintenance or repairs.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines at all times.
  • Assist and train personnel as assigned.

Communication Responsibilities

  • Follow directions from the supervisor or line supervisor.
  • Report repairs and required parts verbally or in writing to the supervisor.
  • Collaborate with and train other mechanics.
  • Work with line workers to identify malfunctions.
  • Read and interpret downtime reports, checklists, and settings in English.

Requirements

  • Experience: Preferably three years in mechanical work on production machinery.
  • Productivity: Meet standards, complete work timely, and strive to increase efficiency.
  • Tools: Provide own hand tools (e.g., wrenches, hammer, screwdrivers refer to list).
  • Proficiency: Perform with minimal supervision in:
    • Welding and gas torch cutting.
    • Removing and replacing motors.
    • Fundamental electrical work.
    • Experience with conveyors, mixing systems, and extrusion.
    • Troubleshooting, alignment, and adjustment.
    • Using hand tools, air tools, and electrical hand tools.
    • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems, clutch brakes, and motorized systems.

Physical Demands

  • Lift/carry 35-50 pounds, up to 100 pounds.
  • Bend, kneel, and twist throughout shifts.
  • Apply torque up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand for 8-10 hours daily, 6-7 days a week.
  • Properly lift and use all tools.
  • Hear machine malfunctions and perceive production alarms/forklift signals above ambient noise.
  • Visually identify worn parts.

Work Environment

  • Wear issued uniform properly.
  • Work with loud, heavy machinery in an unair-conditioned, unheated indoor facility.
  • Perform some outdoor repairs on sand conveyor systems.
  • Expect up to 4 hours overtime daily, 6-7 day workweeks, and varying shifts (day/night).
  • Be available for on-call duty.
  • Tolerate dusty conditions with cement and sand.
  • Adapt to uncomfortable working situations.

Safety Requirements

  • Wear helmet, safety goggles, and steel-toed shoes at all times; use ear plugs, back brace, and gloves as needed.
  • Know safety procedures for all machines, tools, and chemicals.
  • Attend all safety training and monthly meetings.
  • Immediately report safety issues to the supervisor.
  • Understand and follow lockout procedures fully.
  • Report accidents/injuries to management within 24 hours.
