About the Role

The Tax Accountant will have primary responsibility for sales/use tax filings and payroll withholding compliance activities. This role will also support city income taxes, shareholder trust tax filings, and individual income tax returns. Additional responsibilities include assisting with personal property tax filings, general ledger reconciliations, and apportionment schedules. The position will also participate in special projects assigned by tax leadership.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare and file sales and use tax returns, including reviewing fixed asset and expense invoices to determine taxability and apply appropriate tax codes
  • Research state and local tax laws related to sales and use tax compliance within multi-location operational environments
  • Assist with payroll withholding and unemployment insurance compliance filings for multiple states and municipalities using payroll tax software
  • Prepare city corporate income tax returns along with supporting workpapers and research filing requirements to ensure compliance with applicable regulations
  • Prepare trust and individual income tax returns
  • Support sales tax audits by gathering and analyzing documentation, identifying potential exposure areas, and assisting with refund opportunities
  • Participate in special projects involving state and local apportionment schedules and personal property tax returns

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with federal, state, and local income tax compliance, including payroll, sales, and use tax
  • CPA certification preferred
  • Ability to interpret tax returns and understand varying state and local tax regulations
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong communication and tax research skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general computer applications
  • Experience with tax preparation software preferred
  • Experience with payroll tax systems preferred
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage interruptions and shifting priorities while meeting critical deadlines
  • Strong organizational and reading comprehension skills
