Subarc Operator/Welder
Phoenix, AZ 85041

About the Role

This is a hands-on production role focused on operating submerged arc (SAW / Subarc) welding equipment for heavy plate, tanks, structural components, large-diameter fabrications, and other industrial products. You will set up and run Subarc processes for high-deposition, high-quality welds on thick materials, while also performing Dual Shield (gas-shielded flux-cored) welding and supporting material preparation with saws as needed. The work is primarily flat and horizontal position on heavy sections typical of custom industrial fabrication.

What You'll Do

Subarc (SAW) Operation & Welding

  • Set up, operate, and monitor submerged arc welding equipment (including tractors, carriages, turning rolls, and multi-head systems as applicable) to produce high-quality welds on heavy plate, tanks, cylinders, structural members, and large fabrications.
  • Select and set proper parameters (amperage, voltage, travel speed, wire feed, flux type and depth) according to WPS and job requirements.
  • Thread electrode wire, fill and direct flux hoppers, and maintain proper flux coverage and recovery.
  • Perform long seam, circumferential, and other production welds meeting penetration, size, and quality standards.
  • Visually inspect welds, remove slag/flux as needed, and rework or repair defects using hand processes when required.
  • Maintain consistent production quality with minimal supervision.

Dual Shield (FCAW-G) Welding

  • Perform Dual Shield / gas-shielded flux-cored arc welding (FCAW-G) in required positions on carbon steel, stainless, and other materials as assigned.
  • Select correct wire, gas, and parameters per WPS for Dual Shield applications.

Saw Operation & Material Preparation

  • Operate bandsaws, cold saws, and similar production saws to accurately cut plate, pipe, structural shapes, and other materials to length and specification.
  • Set up saws, select appropriate blades, and perform pre-use checks for clean, accurate, and safe cuts.
  • Assist with material handling, positioning (including use of cranes, forklifts, or turning equipment as qualified), and joint preparation.

Quality, Safety & Team Support

  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, tolerances, and work orders.
  • Self-inspect completed welds and assemblies against drawings and acceptance criteria.
  • Operate equipment safely, perform pre-use checks, and report issues promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all PPE, lockout/tagout, fume extraction (where applicable), and shop safety protocols.
  • Provide informal guidance to less-experienced personnel as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of production welding and/or heavy fabrication experience, including hands-on Subarc (SAW) operation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Dual Shield (gas-shielded flux-cored / FCAW-G) welding.
  • Experience operating bandsaws, cold saws, or similar production saws in a fabrication environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and WPS documents.
  • Strong work ethic, reliable attendance, and commitment to quality and safety.
