Senior Accountant

Position Overview

The Senior Accountant performs complex professional accounting work related to the recording, analysis, reconciliation, and reporting of financial transactions. This position is responsible for supporting accurate financial reporting, preparing regulatory filings, performing financial analysis, and ensuring the timely and accurate reconciliation of the general ledger across multiple entities.

The role requires strong knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting, financial statement preparation, auditing principles, and regulatory reporting.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Perform complex accounting activities related to the recording and reporting of financial transactions.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate posting, balancing, and reconciliation of the general ledger for each entity.
  • Prepare financial statements, work papers, and accounting reports for internal accounting and audit purposes.
  • Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures.

Financial Analysis

  • Research and analyze fluctuations in current financial results compared with:
    • Prior year
    • Prior month
    • Budgeted amounts
  • Investigate variances and provide supporting financial analysis.
  • Assist business partners with budget-related activities, proper expenditure coding, document preparation, and other accounting matters.

Regulatory & Statutory Reporting

  • Prepare insurance department quarterly and annual statements.
  • Support the conversion of financial reporting from GAAP accounting to statutory accounting.
  • Prepare insurance department and other required regulatory filings.
  • Work with independent auditors and insurance department auditors to ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements.

Accounting Operations & Process Improvement

  • Review work completed by:
    • Bookkeepers
    • Bank reconciliation staff
    • Accounts payable clerks
  • Ensure financial transactions are processed accurately and appropriately.
  • Recommend improvements to accounting systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Assist with training technical and clerical accounting personnel.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment in performing assigned responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of accounting-related experience, including experience in a lead and/or training capacity.
  • 4+ years of experience applying accounting and auditing principles and practices, including:
    • GAAP
    • Statutory accounting
  • Strong understanding of:
    • General ledger accounting
    • Financial statements
    • Account reconciliations
    • Financial analysis
    • Regulatory reporting
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
  • Ability to meet applicable credit-history requirements.
