Position Overview

The Senior Accountant performs complex accounting work involving the recording, analysis, and reporting of financial transactions. This role is responsible for preparing financial statements, regulatory filings, general ledger reconciliations, and financial analyses while ensuring compliance with GAAP and statutory accounting standards. The Senior Accountant also supports audits, assists business partners with accounting-related activities, and provides guidance to accounting staff.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting

  • Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements and supporting workpapers.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate posting, balancing, and reconciliation of the general ledger for assigned entities.
  • Prepare internal financial reports and documentation for accounting and auditing purposes.
  • Research and analyze financial variances by comparing current results to prior periods and budgeted amounts.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual insurance regulatory filings, including the conversion of financial statements from GAAP to statutory accounting.

Audit & Compliance

  • Coordinate with independent auditors and insurance department auditors to ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements.
  • Ensure accounting practices comply with GAAP, statutory accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend improvements to accounting systems, processes, and procedures.

Business & Operational Support

  • Assist business partners with budgeting activities, expenditure coding, financial documentation, and other accounting-related matters.
  • Review the work completed by bookkeepers, bank reconciliation staff, and Accounts Payable personnel to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Provide training and guidance to technical and clerical accounting staff as needed.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of accounting experience.
  • Experience serving in a lead, mentoring, or training capacity.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience applying accounting and auditing principles, including GAAP and statutory accounting.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting principles.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and regulatory reports.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.

Additional Requirements

  • Clean credit history as determined by a credit report.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of job responsibilities.
