Quality Control (QC) Assistant
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Quality Control (QC) Assistant to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you will support daily quality inspections throughout the fabrication process, ensuring products meet company standards, engineering drawings, welding procedures, and applicable industry codes.
The ideal candidate has experience in a welding, fabrication, or manufacturing environment, enjoys working on the production floor, and has a strong eye for detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform in-process and final visual inspections of welded assemblies.
- Inspect welds for quality and identify defects such as porosity, undercut, cracks, incomplete fusion, and incorrect weld size.
- Verify fit-up, joint preparation, and dimensional accuracy before and after welding.
- Ensure welders are following the appropriate Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and work instructions.
- Perform dimensional inspections using measuring tools and gauges.
- Inspect incoming materials to verify quantities, identification, and quality.
- Clearly communicate quality concerns and corrective actions to production personnel.
- Document inspection results and maintain accurate quality records.
- Assist with nonconformance reporting and verify corrective actions have been completed.
- Support nondestructive testing (NDT/NDE) activities as needed.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Perform other quality-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in quality inspection, welding, fabrication, or manufacturing.
- Ability to identify common weld defects through visual inspection.
- Experience reading blueprints, fabrication drawings, and weld symbols.
- Working knowledge of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting.
Preferred
- Familiarity with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or willingness to obtain certification.
- Experience assisting with nondestructive testing (MT, PT, or UT).
- Experience working in a structural steel or heavy fabrication environment.
- Familiarity with quality management systems and inspection documentation.
- Experience using inspection tools such as weld gauges, calipers, and measuring devices.
Work Environment
- Primarily works in a manufacturing and fabrication shop.
- Regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Must be comfortable working around heavy equipment, welding operations, heat, dust, and noise.
- Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hard hat, and steel-toe boots.
Schedule
- Full-time
- Monday through Friday
- Occasional overtime may be required based on production needs.
