Senior Python / Azure Integration Engineer – VM Refactor & Application Modernization

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Python / Azure Integration Engineer to support the modernization and refactoring of an existing virtual-machine-based application and integration environment.

The individual will be responsible for analyzing the existing environment, refactoring legacy Python-based processes and integrations, migrating appropriate workloads from the existing virtual machine architecture into an Azure Function App, and establishing a more maintainable, automated, and observable application environment.

This role requires strong hands-on experience with Python development, Azure, REST APIs, cloud integrations, data movement, source control, application deployment, and production monitoring. The ideal candidate is comfortable working within an existing codebase and integration ecosystem and can translate a current-state architecture into a cleaner, cloud-oriented target state.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze the existing virtual machine-based application and integration environment and understand current workflows, dependencies, scheduled processes, scripts, and data flows.

• Review and refactor existing Python code and Python-based automation.

• Migrate appropriate application functionality from the existing VM environment into Azure Function App architecture.

• Develop and maintain Python-based serverless functions and supporting application components.

• Integrate with external systems through REST APIs, including systems such as:

  • Adaptive Insights

  • Workday

  • Salesforce

  • Azure Blob Storage

  • Other REST/API-based services

• Work with existing R scripts, MySQL databases, SFTP processes, and file-based data exchanges as part of the modernization effort.

• Understand and refactor existing scheduled processes currently operating through Task Scheduler.

• Develop reliable data ingestion, transformation, processing, and export workflows.

• Refactor legacy integrations while maintaining required business functionality and data integrity.

• Work with RaaS REST APIs and other application-specific APIs where required by the target architecture.

• Manage and maintain source code using GitHub.

• Establish or support automated code deployment from GitHub into the Azure environment.

• Implement appropriate error handling, logging, exception management, and retry mechanisms.

• Configure and utilize Azure Application Insights for application monitoring and troubleshooting.

• Develop and configure alerting/notification rules for application failures, integration issues, and other operational events.

• Troubleshoot application, API, integration, and data-processing failures.

• Document application architecture, integrations, dependencies, deployment processes, and operational procedures.

• Coordinate with technical stakeholders to validate functionality during the transition from the current state to the target state.

• Support testing, deployment, stabilization, and production handoff.

Required Technical Experience

Python Development

• Strong professional experience developing applications and automation using Python.

• Experience working within and refactoring an existing Python codebase.

• Strong understanding of Python application architecture, modular design, error handling, logging, testing, and maintainability.

• Experience converting scripts and scheduled automation into production-quality applications or services.

• Ability to troubleshoot existing Python code rather than relying solely on greenfield development.

Microsoft Azure

• Hands-on experience developing and deploying applications within Microsoft Azure.

• Strong experience with Azure Functions / Function Apps.

• Understanding of serverless application architecture and event-driven processing.

• Experience with Azure Blob Storage.

• Experience with Application Insights and Azure application monitoring.

• Experience configuring application alerts and operational monitoring.

• Familiarity with Azure authentication, permissions, secrets, and secure application configuration.

API & Integration Development

• Strong experience developing and consuming REST APIs.

• Experience integrating multiple third-party and enterprise applications.

• Understanding of authentication methods, API credentials, tokens, headers, payloads, pagination, rate limits, and error handling.

• Experience troubleshooting API connectivity and integration issues.

• Experience working with structured data formats such as JSON and XML.

• Ability to develop reliable integrations between cloud applications, databases, file systems, and external APIs.

Data & Database Experience

• Working knowledge of MySQL.

• Experience querying, transforming, and moving data between systems.

• Understanding of data integrity, validation, transformation, and reconciliation.

• Experience working with cloud object storage such as Azure Blob Storage.

• Experience with SFTP-based data exchanges.

• Ability to work with data originating from SaaS applications, APIs, databases, and flat files.

Source Control & Deployment

• Strong experience with Git and GitHub.

• Experience managing application source code and branches.

• Experience deploying Python applications/code through GitHub-based workflows.

• Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and automated application deployment.

• Ability to establish repeatable and controlled deployment processes.

Monitoring & Operations

• Experience implementing application logging and monitoring.

• Experience with Azure Application Insights preferred.

• Ability to establish meaningful application health and error monitoring.

• Experience creating operational alerts and notifications.

• Strong troubleshooting and root-cause-analysis skills.

• Understanding of production application support and reliability.

• Experience migrating applications from traditional VM-based architectures to Azure serverless/cloud architectures.

• Experience replacing Windows Task Scheduler-based processes with cloud-native scheduling or event-driven architecture.

• Strong analytical and troubleshooting capabilities.

• Ability to independently understand unfamiliar systems and code.

• Ability to work collaboratively with application owners, infrastructure teams, data teams, and business stakeholders.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is not simply a Python developer. They should be an experienced Python/Azure integration engineer who can look at an existing VM-hosted environment, understand how the various integrations and scheduled processes work, and methodically transform that environment into a more modern Azure-based architecture.

The candidate should be comfortable working across the entire application lifecycle—from code analysis and refactoring through API integration, Azure deployment, GitHub-based code management, testing, monitoring, alerting, and production support.

Experience with the specific systems shown in the architecture is highly valuable, particularly Adaptive Insights, Workday/RaaS, Salesforce, Azure Blob Storage, REST APIs, MySQL, SFTP, Python, GitHub, Azure Functions, and Application Insights.

This position is best suited for a Senior-level Python/Azure engineer capable of taking ownership of an existing integration environment and helping transition it from a VM-centric architecture to a more modern, cloud-based application model.
