Principal AI Engineer
Overview
Client is seeking a Principal AI Engineer to design and build production-grade AI applications that integrate clinical and enterprise workflows. This client-facing consulting role focuses on moving AI solutions beyond prototypes into secure, maintainable, and scalable implementations that connect data, tools, workflows, and users.
The successful candidate will partner with clinicians, architects, data teams, security leaders, and operations stakeholders to deliver AI-enabled applications on Google Cloud Platform, with a strong focus on agentic systems, large language models, clinical operations, governance, and production readiness.
Core Responsibilities
• Design and build agentic AI systems that orchestrate multi-step workflows, use tools, retrieve context, and support human-in-the-loop processes for clinical and operational use cases.
• Develop AI solutions using Google Cloud technologies, including Vertex AI, Gemini models, Vertex AI Agent Builder, Vertex AI Search, Document AI, BigQuery, and related services.
• Build LLM-powered solutions for clinical note processing, document extraction, summarization, and structured data generation from healthcare content.
• Establish MLOps and CI/CD practices, including infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, observability, release controls, and environment management for AI-enabled applications.
• Develop retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions that securely connect clinical content, structured data, EHR systems, document repositories, and operational platforms.
• Implement authentication, authorization, RBAC, auditability, logging, data access controls, and governance practices to support compliant handling of PHI.
• Define and execute evaluation frameworks for agent performance, prompt quality, retrieval relevance, latency, reliability, hallucination risk, and response quality.
• Serve as a hands-on technical advisor embedded with client teams to drive architecture decisions, resolve implementation challenges, and move AI solutions into production.
• Mentor engineers and consultants while contributing reusable design patterns, reference architectures, DevOps templates, and Google Cloud AI delivery accelerators.
Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Technologies
• 6 years of experience in software engineering, cloud engineering, AI engineering, enterprise application development, or solution architecture within consulting, healthcare, or client-facing delivery environments.
• Hands-on experience designing and building agentic AI applications, including orchestration, tools, memory, planning, multi-step workflows, RAG, and human-in-the-loop controls.
• Strong experience with Vertex AI and the Google Cloud AI ecosystem, including Gemini models, Vertex AI Agent Builder, Vertex AI Search, Document AI, BigQuery, and related Google Cloud services.
• Strong proficiency with technologies used for AI application development, including Python, TypeScript, Go, FastAPI, LangChain, LangGraph, or similar frameworks.
• Experience with GitHub Actions, Cloud Build, CI/CD pipelines, Terraform, APIs, containers, GKE, Cloud Run, monitoring, logging, environment promotion, and production release management.
• Experience integrating AI solutions with clinical and operational healthcare systems, including EHR platforms, clinical documentation workflows, HL7, FHIR, and regulated PHI environments.
• Understanding of AI evaluation, prompt and version management, automated testing, telemetry, tracing, monitoring, model behavior analysis, and operational support practices.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate technical tradeoffs and recommendations to executives, clinical leaders, platform teams, security stakeholders, and operations users.
Preferred Skills or Experience
• Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer, Professional Cloud Architect, Generative AI Leader, or related Google Cloud and AI certifications.
• GitHub, Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer, Kubernetes (CKA), Terraform, or other cloud-native engineering certifications.
• HIPAA, Responsible AI, or healthcare data and AI governance-related certifications.
