Special Education Services Consultant – Arizona State Hospital
Arizona State Hospital is seeking a highly qualified Special Education professional to provide oversight and guidance for special education services to patients under the age of 22 who qualify for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This position reports directly to the Chief Compliance Officer and serves as a subject matter expert to ensure all educational programming complies with state and federal requirements established by the Arizona Department of Education and the United States Department of Education.
This is a very part-time consulting role, requiring availability for approximately 1 to 5 hours per month on an as-needed basis to provide guidance, oversight, and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, and evaluate special education programming
- Review records for patients under age 22 who have not graduated from high school to determine eligibility for special education services
- Conduct interviews, educational evaluations, and assessments
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and curricula in compliance with IDEA
- Establish measurable educational goals and objectives based on each patient’s current level of functioning
- Document evaluations, goals, and progress in accordance with hospital policies
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning
- Provide education and support to teaching staff
- Maintain education records and data in compliance with Arizona and federal regulations
- Complete required reports for funding and program management
Required Qualifications
- Valid Arizona Special Education Teaching Certification ( required – certification must be submitted)
- Extensive knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, and IDEA mandates
- Experience conducting educational assessments and designing individualized curricula
- Strong understanding of behavioral theory and educational strategies in mental health or psychiatric settings
- Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with students or patients with significant emotional, behavioral, or developmental needs
- Background in psychiatric, behavioral health, or inpatient hospital settings
- Experience supervising teachers or providing technical oversight
Schedule
- 1 to 5 hours per month
- Flexible, as-needed consulting support
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a certified Special Education expert with deep knowledge of IDEA compliance, IEP development, and educational programming. They should be comfortable working in a psychiatric hospital environment and able to provide strategic guidance to ensure educational services meet all state and federal requirements.
