Payroll Tax Specialist

Work Schedule: 100% Onsite
Duration: Contract with potential for extension

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Tax Specialist with strong experience supporting payroll tax operations after payroll has been processed. This role focuses on payroll tax processing, tax filings, agency correspondence, notice resolution, and working with third-party tax providers. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, has multi-state payroll tax experience, and can manage multiple priorities with accuracy and consistency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and support payroll tax activities after payroll processing is complete.
  • Prepare and submit federal, state, and FICA payroll tax filings.
  • Research, review, and resolve payroll tax notices from federal and state agencies.
  • Communicate directly with state agencies regarding payroll tax matters.
  • Coordinate with third-party tax providers to resolve tax-related issues.
  • Process and maintain Power of Attorney (POA) documentation and third-party authorizations.
  • Support payroll tax testing and validation for system updates and projects.
  • Manage internal service tickets and collaborate with external tax vendors.
  • Attend project meetings and provide updates on payroll tax initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate payroll tax records and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Identify and resolve payroll tax discrepancies in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of payroll tax experience.
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and FICA payroll taxes.
  • Experience processing payroll tax filings.
  • Experience working with multi-state payroll taxes.
  • Previous experience communicating with state tax agencies.
  • Experience handling tax notices, Power of Attorney (POA) documentation, and third-party authorizations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting payroll tax-related projects or system testing.
  • Experience working with payroll tax vendors and external service providers.
