Position Summary
We are seeking an Optical Measurements Systems Engineer to join the Corning Environmental Technologies (CET) Engineering Measurements & Controls group. This engineer will be responsible for the development, assembly, testing, integration, and deployment of optical and computer vision-based measurement systems supporting the metrology, inspection, and testing of CET products.
The position will work closely with cross-functional teams and external suppliers to transition measurement technologies from early-stage development into reliable manufacturing systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement optical and computer vision-based measurement and instrumentation systems.
- Collaborate with Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, and Operations teams to define system requirements and solutions.
- Transfer technology from development into manufacturing.
- Partner with external suppliers and system integrators to implement key technologies.
- Develop scopes of work, obtain competitive quotes, issue purchase orders, track supplier activities, and approve invoices.
- Design experiments and analyze data to improve measurement systems and production processes.
- Create and maintain production documentation, including machine specifications, operating procedures, and drawing packages.
- Train engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel on the use and maintenance of measurement systems.
- Provide onsite and remote troubleshooting using system performance data and analysis.
- Support system checkout, installation, integration, and deployment.
Required Qualifications
- BS or MS degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering with 3+ years of hands-on experience with machine vision and metrology equipment; OR
- PhD in one of the above disciplines.
- Hands-on experience with vision systems is required.
- Experience developing optical measurement systems involving cameras, lighting, image acquisition, image analysis, lasers, and/or 3D measurement.
- Fundamental understanding of physical optics.
- Knowledge of image-processing techniques such as blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, and metrology.
- Experience with Microsoft Visual Studio; C# and Python strongly preferred.
- Experience with systems engineering and integration.
- Knowledge of digital signal processing.
- Experience with electrical, optical, and mechanical installations, system checkout, and troubleshooting.
- Strong communication, presentation, and Microsoft Office skills.
- Experience retrieving, plotting, and analyzing data, primarily using Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Halcon, Matrox Inspector, NI Vision, Cognex, Keyence, or MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox.
- PLC and control systems experience.
- Process engineering experience, including DOE, statistical analysis, and process improvement.
- Experience with manufacturing metrology, inspection, and product quality.
- Motion-control integration for imaging platforms.
- Experience with high-performance computing systems.
- Experience with 3D transformations, topography, point clouds, surface meshes, and 3D registration.
- Experience developing automated 3D metrology and inspection solutions.
- Familiarity with machine learning and deep learning theory.
- Experience designing or deploying machine learning/deep learning models.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working across engineering and manufacturing environments, troubleshooting complex systems, analyzing data, and transitioning new technologies into production.
Strong communication skills, independence, adaptability, problem-solving ability, and the ability to manage multiple priorities are essential.
