Senior Machinist

Shift: 1st Shift | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Machinist to set up and operate a variety of conventional and numerically controlled machining equipment to produce precision and complex components. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with tight-tolerance machining, precision inspection equipment, machine setups, and blueprint reading.

This position works with limited guidance in a team environment and requires the ability to follow established manufacturing processes while making appropriate machine adjustments to consistently produce quality parts.

Key Requirement – Tight-Tolerance Experience

The hiring manager is specifically looking for candidates who have experience machining and inspecting parts to tight tolerances of .003" or better, with the position requiring precision inspection capabilities involving tolerances of less than .0005".

Candidates should be prepared to provide the tightest tolerance they have personally machined and consistently held.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate multiple production machines, including conventional and CNC equipment.

  • Perform machining operations such as cutting, shaping, drilling, grinding, forming, and deburring.

  • Perform rework operations as required to bring components into specification.

  • Set up and secure work using standard fixtures and established work-holding methods.

  • Install and adjust cutting tools based on material type, machine requirements, and established processes.

  • Determine and adjust feeds, spindle speeds, and depth of cut to produce quality parts.

  • Work from engineering blueprints, sketches, planning sheets, route sheets, specifications, and verbal instructions.

  • Read and interpret machining drawings and manufacturing documentation.

  • Operate and work with equipment such as:

    • OD, ID, profile, and surface grinders

    • CNC lathes

    • Wire EDMs

    • Broaches

    • Manual machining equipment

  • Work with fixtures, arbors, vises, chucks, carriers, collets, and other work-holding/clamping systems.

  • Deburr precision and complex machined components and features.

  • Inspect finished and in-process components for dimensional and visual conformance.

  • Use precision inspection equipment including:

    • Micrometers

    • Calipers

    • Height gauges

    • Indicators

    • Bore gauges

    • Surface finish comparators

    • Other precision measurement equipment

  • Use magnification equipment, including microscopes when required, to identify surface damage or defects.

  • Perform visual inspections for burrs, damaged surfaces, and other machining defects.

  • Accurately complete required shop documentation, job travelers, inspection records, time reporting, and electronic manufacturing records.

  • Perform statistical process control (SPC) activities as required.

  • Routinely maintain machining equipment to support cleanliness, accuracy, and reliability.

  • Handle raw materials, semi-finished components, and finished parts using appropriate carts, hoists, lifts, or other material-handling equipment.

  • Participate in Lean manufacturing initiatives and identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, and cost.

  • Follow all company safety, quality, and manufacturing procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area.

  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of related machining experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform machine setups with limited guidance.

  • Experience operating conventional and/or CNC machining equipment.

  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, route sheets, and manufacturing instructions.

  • Experience machining to tight/close tolerances.

  • Ability to use precision inspection equipment such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, gauges, and comparators.

  • Working knowledge of machine-shop mathematics, including basic trigonometry.

  • Understanding of feeds, speeds, depth of cut, tooling, and work-holding.

  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.

  • Ability to accurately complete production, inspection, and electronic manufacturing documentation.

  • Ability to apply Lean manufacturing concepts and identify process improvements.

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to use job-specific software and employee self-service systems.

Preferred / Strongly Desired Experience

Candidates will be especially competitive if they have experience with:

  • Precision or aerospace machining

  • Tight-tolerance components

  • CNC setup and operation

  • OD/ID/profile/surface grinding

  • Wire EDM

  • Broaching

  • Manual machining

  • Complex mechanical components

  • Precision inspection and dimensional verification

  • SPC

  • Lean manufacturing

  • Engineering drawings and close-tolerance specifications

Candidate Screening Notes

For each candidate submitted, please include:

1. Tightest tolerance:
Document the tightest tolerance the candidate has personally machined and held.

2. Machines operated:
List the specific CNC, grinders, EDMs, broaches, and/or manual equipment they have used.

3. Inspection equipment:
Identify experience with micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators, bore gauges, comparators, microscopes, etc.

4. Setup experience:
Confirm whether the candidate independently performs machine setups.

5. Reason for leaving each recent position:
Provide a clear explanation for each job transition, as this information will help determine interview suitability.
