We are seeking an experienced Senior Locomotive Mechanic / Electrician for a hands-on role supporting diesel-electric locomotives and railroad equipment throughout the field and shop environment.

This is not a trainee position. We're looking for a journeyman-level mechanic who can independently diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and air-brake systems, work with limited supervision, and serve as a technical resource to other mechanics.

The position is based in Baytown, TX, with significant travel throughout the country. Candidates who enjoy field work, troubleshooting complex equipment, and working on different locomotive units are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Do

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel-electric locomotives and railroad equipment.

  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and air-brake systems.

  • Work on EMD and Client locomotives, including running repairs and major component work.

  • Troubleshoot locomotive control systems, wiring, batteries, charging systems, traction systems, and high-current electrical components.

  • Perform and lead engine, truck, brake, and major-component repairs and overhauls.

  • Inspect and repair safety-critical locomotive systems and document defects and corrective actions.

  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, locomotive drawings, work orders, and parts information.

  • Test completed repairs, perform load checks, and assist with locomotive operation prior to return to service.

  • Use electrical meters, hand tools, cutting torches, welders, forklifts, and other shop equipment.

  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts, labor, and required documentation.

  • Help train and mentor less-experienced mechanics and electricians.

  • Coordinate with supervisors, train crews, and customers regarding equipment status, repair timelines, and parts requirements.

  • Identify repeat equipment failures, parts shortages, and other maintenance issues.

  • Follow all company and customer safety requirements.

  • Travel and work away from your home area, including overnight assignments.

  • Work nights, weekends, overtime, and irregular schedules when required.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience repairing diesel-electric locomotives or closely related diesel-electric/heavy power-generation equipment.

  • Working knowledge of EMD and/or Client locomotive systems.

  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability.

  • Experience with locomotive electrical systems, diesel prime movers, and air-brake systems.

  • Ability to diagnose equipment problems independently without step-by-step direction.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, work orders, and locomotive drawings.

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

  • Ability to complete required safety training.

  • Willingness and ability to travel overnight up to five days per week.

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, nights, weekends, and overtime as required.

Related Experience Considered

Candidates without five years specifically on locomotives may be considered if they have significant experience with comparable diesel-electric, heavy equipment, marine, or industrial power-generation systems, particularly where the work involved high-voltage/high-current electrical systems and diesel prime movers.

Locomotive experience is strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EMD locomotive experience

  • Client locomotive experience

  • Welding experience

  • Cutting-torch experience

  • Forklift experience

  • Prior experience training or mentoring mechanics

  • Previous technical lead experience

  • Railroad or heavy-equipment maintenance background

Important: This Is a Working Technical Role

Although this is a Senior position, it does not automatically include formal supervisory authority.

You will be expected to take technical ownership of assigned work, help set the quality and safety standard for the crew, and provide guidance to less-experienced mechanics.

Physical & Work Environment

This is a hands-on mechanical/electrical position performed in locomotive shops and outdoor field environments.

The job may involve:

  • Standing, walking, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.

  • Working around moving railroad equipment.

  • Exposure to weather, vibration, noise, fumes, oils, grease, and airborne particles.

  • Working around live electrical systems and potential electrical-shock hazards.

  • Working at heights.

  • Regularly lifting or moving up to 25 pounds and frequently lifting or moving up to 100 pounds with assistance when required.

  • Use of required PPE and hearing protection.

Color vision is required for electrical work.
