Legal Assistant – Appellate Services Administration (ASA)
Primarily virtual position requiring in-person attendance four scheduled days per month. Provides administrative and legal support to Administrative Law Judges within DES Appellate Services Administration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and verify incoming appeals and determine timeliness.
- Research case information and identify appropriate legal documents and exhibits.
- Prepare hearing packets for Administrative Law Judges.
- Schedule hearings and process postponements, withdrawals, and other requests.
- Enter case notes and documentation into case management systems.
- Upload legal decisions and dispositions for departmental action.
- Assist ALJs with case research and elevated docket calls.
- Maintain confidential electronic and paper case files.
- Identify discrepancies, missing documents, jurisdictional issues, and appeal-related concerns.
- Manage multiple priorities while meeting state and federally mandated deadlines.
Qualifications/Skills:
Strong attention to detail, organization, customer service, critical thinking, research, and written/verbal communication skills. Must be able to handle confidential information, work independently, and manage multiple systems simultaneously. Experience with Google Workspace, Adobe Acrobat, electronic document systems, and case management systems
is preferred. Knowledge of public assistance, unemployment insurance, administrative procedures, or legal processes is beneficial.
