Heavy Steel Duct Welder
Phoenix, AZ 85041
About the Role
This is a hands-on production welding and fit-up role focused on fabricating heavy-gauge industrial ductwork and related components (round and rectangular duct, elbows, transitions, hoppers, chutes, and specialty fabrications). You will perform all-position TIG (GTAW) and Flux-Core (FCAW) welding, including large-diameter work up to 10' diameter, Client out and fit-up from drawings, and produce high-quality work on thicker plate typical of industrial/mining applications (not light-gauge HVAC sheet metal).
What You'll Do
Production Welding
- Perform GTAW (TIG) and FCAW (Flux-Core) welding in all positions (1F–4F, 1G–4G) on heavy steel ductwork, transitions, elbows, hoppers, and related industrial fabrications.
- Weld large-diameter duct and components up to 10' diameter.
- Execute multi-pass welds on carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and AR plate per company WPS and applicable acceptance criteria.
- Select and verify correct filler metals, shielding gases, and parameters for each material and joint configuration (including proper practices for stainless and aluminum).
- Consistently produce welds that meet drawing and quality requirements with minimal supervision.
Fit-Up, Layout & Assembly
- Independently Client out, fit, and assemble duct sections and custom components from fabrication drawings using tape measures, squares, levels, and other layout tools.
- Perform accurate tack welding and weld sequencing on varied geometries and thicknesses.
- Prepare joints with grinders, wire wheels, and flap discs (including contamination-prevention practices for stainless).
- Identify and report fit-up, dimensional, or drawing issues to the Shop Lead before proceeding.
Quality, Safety & Team Support
- Self-inspect completed welds and assemblies against drawings and acceptance criteria.
- Operate welding equipment, grinders, and related tools safely; perform pre-use checks and report issues.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all PPE, lockout/tagout, fume extraction, and shop safety protocols.
- Provide informal guidance to less-experienced welders or apprentices as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of production welding and/or heavy fabrication experience, preferably including industrial ductwork, platework, tanks, hoppers, or structural components.
- Active welder performance qualifications in all positions using GTAW (TIG) and FCAW (Flux-Core), documented and current per applicable WPS or code.
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent structural/custom fit-up and layout from drawings.
- Strong ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, and tolerances.
- Proficiency with angle grinders and hand tools for preparation and finishing across multiple materials.
- Reliable attendance, strong work ethic, and commitment to quality and safety.
