Head of Finance

Position Overview: We are seeking a hands-on Head of Finance to lead the Finance function for a small, PE-backed fintech organization operating in a lean, fast-paced environment. This is a Finance leadership role first and foremost, with Financial Planning & Analysis as the top priority. The ideal candidate will bring strong FP&A expertise, solid accounting and controllership capabilities, and the flexibility to handle basic payroll, benefits, and employee administration in a small-company setting. This role is best suited for someone who enjoys operating close to the business, working directly with executive leadership and private equity stakeholders, and personally owning the work rather than managing a large team.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting
  • Own monthly budget reconciliation and variance analysis
  • Build and maintain financial models
  • Provide clear visibility into cash flow and financial performance
  • Prepare management reporting and financial analysis for executive leadership
  • Explain actual performance versus plan and identify key drivers behind variances
  • Support strategic planning and financial decision-making
  • Prepare accurate and timely reporting for private equity and investor stakeholders
Accounting & Controllership
  • Oversee month-end close and general accounting activities
  • Ensure accuracy of financial statements and reconciliations
  • Maintain appropriate financial controls and accounting processes
  • Manage accounting operations in a lean environment
  • Support audit, tax, and compliance activities as needed
  • Ensure the Finance function can operate effectively without requiring another senior accounting leader
HR & People Administration
Because the company operates with a small employee population, this role will also oversee basic day-to-day HR administration, including:
  • Payroll
  • Benefits administration
  • Medical, dental, and vision plans
  • 401(k) administration
  • Basic employee administration
  • Onboarding support
  • Coordination with external vendors and service providers as needed
The HR portion of the role is expected to remain significantly smaller than the Finance responsibilities.

Ideal Background
  • Significant experience in FP&A, including budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial modeling
  • Strong accounting and controllership fundamentals
  • Experience working directly with CEOs, executive teams, boards, investors, or private equity sponsors
  • Experience in a startup, PE-backed organization, small company, or other lean operating environment
  • Comfortable personally owning both strategic and tactical Finance responsibilities
  • Experience building or improving processes rather than simply inheriting mature systems
  • Comfortable operating without a large Finance or administrative support team
  • Exposure to payroll, benefits, or basic HR administration
  • Strong executive communication skills
SaaS, fintech, software, or professional services experience is helpful but not required.

Leadership & Working Style
The successful candidate will be confident, resilient, and comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy.
They should be able to:
  • Work effectively in a high-volume, fast-moving environment
  • Communicate directly and candidly with executive leadership
  • Challenge assumptions and push back when appropriate
  • Remain composed during difficult conversations
  • Support their recommendations with data and sound judgment
  • Balance confidence with humility
  • Build strong relationships without being overly political or hierarchical
  • Roll up their sleeves and handle work at all levels when needed
This role requires someone with a strong point of view who can hold their ground without becoming abrasive or difficult to work with.

Work Arrangement
  • Fully remote within the United States
  • Full-time position
  • Required core operating hours: 8:30 AM–2:00 PM Pacific, Monday through Friday
  • Flexibility outside core hours while maintaining a normal full-time workload
