Electro-Mechanical Automation Technician

Position Type: Direct Hire, $80000 to $85000

Travel: Up to 50% (Short-term regional travel, typically 3 to 7 days)

Job Summary:

The Electro-Mechanical Automation Technician is responsible for the full build, integration, and field deployment of complex automated machinery. This role requires a strong split skill set: executing precise mechanical assembly from engineering drawings alongside high-density electrical routing, sensor integration, and field terminations. This position involves working both in-shop and traveling to customer facilities to install, commission, and service custom automation systems.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical & Controls Integration:

  • Perform high-density field terminations, multi-line cabling, and precise electrical routing on automated machinery.

  • Manage clean wire routing, bundling, and wire-tie management; execute meticulous labeling of all electrical lines and circuits.

  • Integrate, wire, and position control devices including proximity switches, photo eyes, and various automation sensors.

  • Interpret and work directly from complex electrical schematics and control diagrams.

Mechanical Assembly & Fabrication:

  • Build, align, and integrate precision mechanical components and subassemblies from blueprints.

  • Perform manual fabrication tasks including drilling, tapping, and mechanical fitting to mount boxes, route conduit, and secure hardware.

  • Interpret mechanical blueprints, pneumatic diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.

  • Light welding and advanced fabrication skills are a plus, but not required.

Field Service & Commissioning:

  • Set up, run-off, and debug automation equipment in-shop prior to shipment.

  • Travel to customer manufacturing sites (up to 50%) to handle field installation, final terminations, troubleshooting, and equipment servicing.

  • Collaborate directly with design engineers to provide feedback on assembly efficiency and resolve technical bugs.

Education, Experience, and Technical Requirements

  • Experience: 3+ years of hands-on experience in machine building, automation assembly, or an electro-mechanical technician role.

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical certification or trade schooling in electrical, automation, or mechatronics is a plus.

  • Schematic Literacy: Proven ability to accurately read and interpret mechanical blueprints, electrical schematics, and fluid power (pneumatic/hydraulic) diagrams.

  • Tool Proficiency: Strong manual dexterity and experience with industrial hand tools, power tools, taps, and electrical testing/termination equipment.

  • Travel Capability: Ability to travel up to 50% of the time for short-term trips (typically 3 to 7 days) and work overtime as production schedules require.

  • Pre-employment Qualifications: Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
