Data Center Cabling Installation Technician (Smart Hands / Cabling Technician)
Position Summary
We are seeking experienced Data Center Cabling Installation Technicians to support a large-scale network and infrastructure deployment project. Technicians will be responsible for receiving and inventorying materials, preparing installation work areas, labeling and installing fiber and copper cabling, installing transceivers, and performing cable verification activities within a mission-critical data center environment.
The ideal candidate will possess strong attention to detail, experience working in structured cabling environments, and the ability to work efficiently as part of a large deployment team while maintaining quality and accuracy throughout the installation process.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Installation Site Preparation
- Arrive onsite prior to installation activities to assist with project preparation.
- Participate in site walkthroughs and identify potential installation barriers, risks, or logistical concerns.
- Assist in establishing and organizing staging and work areas.
- Set up shelves, tables, storage locations, and installation workspaces.
- Organize cabling and installation materials for efficient deployment.
- Support cable labeling validation and verification activities.
- Coordinate with project leadership and customer representatives regarding labeling standards and approval requirements.
Receiving and Inventory Management
- Receive inbound shipments of cabling, transceivers, and related infrastructure equipment.
- Unbox and inspect delivered materials.
- Perform inventory counts and validate received equipment against project documentation.
- Organize and stage materials for installation teams.
- Transport equipment and materials to designated installation locations.
- Remove and dispose of packaging materials in accordance with site requirements and safety standards.
Rack, Stack & Infrastructure Installation
- Install transceivers within network equipment and infrastructure platforms.
- Apply equipment identification labels as required by project standards.
- Support physical installation activities within cabinets, racks, and network infrastructure environments.
- Ensure all equipment is installed according to project specifications and quality standards.
Structured Cabling Installation
- Inventory and organize cabling prior to deployment.
- Print and apply cable identification labels using handheld industrial label printers.
- Prepare, route, dress, and secure cables according to established cabling standards.
- Install and connect cables into designated network ports and equipment.
- Maintain proper cable management practices throughout installation activities.
- Ensure cabling pathways remain organized, clean, and compliant with customer standards.
Testing & Verification
- Verify cable installations are connected to the correct ports and destinations.
- Confirm link light functionality and connectivity status.
- Assist with installation quality assurance inspections.
- Support documentation and verification processes as directed by project leadership.
- Identify and report installation discrepancies or issues requiring remediation.
Required Qualifications
- Experience with structured cabling installations in data center, enterprise, or telecommunications environments.
- Familiarity with fiber optic and copper cabling standards and best practices.
- Ability to read and follow installation documentation, rack elevations, and port assignments.
- Experience performing equipment inventory and material handling activities.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to installation quality.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials safely.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous data center deployment experience.
- Smart Hands experience within enterprise or colocation facilities.
- Experience using Brady or similar industrial labeling systems.
- Familiarity with transceiver installation and network hardware deployments.
- Experience with cable dressing, cable management, and infrastructure commissioning projects.
