A Production Operator for Webasto Roof Systems supporting BMW (operating on-site or just-in-sequence near the Greer/Greenville plant) is responsible for assembling, inspecting, and sequencing panoramic sunroof and roof modules before they are installed onto the vehicle line.

Because Webasto operates as a Tier-1 Just-in-Time (JIT) / Just-in-Sequence (JIS) supplier, work is fast-paced and directly tied to BMW's build schedule.

Core Assembly & Mechanical Work

  • Mechanical Sub-Assembly: Assemble sunroof cassettes, roller blinds/sunshades, drainage channels, mounting brackets, drive cables, and electric drive motors using torque-controlled screwdrivers and pneumatic tools.
  • Sealing & Priming: Apply weatherstripping, specialized seals, and urethane primers or adhesives along glass and frame edges.
  • Electrical Routing: Clip and secure wiring harnesses and connect sensors/actuators to ensure power and switch signals integrate smoothly with BMW's CAN bus network.
Testing, Alignment & Quality Control
  • Cycle & Function Testing: Place assembled roofs into automated test fixtures to cycle glass open/tilt/close motions, verify limit switches, and check motor amp draw for binding or noise.
  • Gap & Flushness Verification: Check that glass panels seat flush within tight automotive tolerances using feeler gauges, calipers, or optical laser gauges.
  • Leak & Cosmetic Inspection: Verify continuous seal placement to prevent water intrusion and inspect panoramic glass for scratches, delamination, or debris.
Sequencing & Material Handling
  • JIS Rack Loading: Load finished roof modules into specialized sequence racks or automated delivery carts, ensuring units precisely match the broadcast schedule of BMW's assembly line (VIN-to-VIN matching).
  • Material Management: Keep track of sub-components, scan barcodes into the production system (MES), and escalate part defects or non-conformities before delivery.
Work Environment & Expectations
  • Physical Requirements: Standing for 8- to 12-hour shifts, repetitive lifting (often 30–50 lbs assisted by overhead zero-gravity lifters/manipulators), and high-reach handling.
  • Standards: Strict adherence to Standard Process Instructions (SPIs), 5S workplace organization, and zero-defect automotive escalation protocols.
