Description: Lockheed Job Title is Packaging Engineer Associate.

The candidate will support program Packaging, Handling, Storage, and Transportation activities by coordinating packaging and shipping requirements across Program Integrated Product Teams, suppliers, vendors, customers, and the Shipping Team/Department. This role will assist with the development of system, subsystem, and component packaging and transportation requirements, including the creation and maintenance of Special Packaging Instructions as required.

The candidate will help ensure contractual packaging requirements, Department of Transportation regulations, hazardous material shipping requirements, and Performance Oriented Packaging requirements are understood and followed. Shipments may include hazardous materials, classified items, unclassified items, system hardware, subsystem hardware, components, and other program material.

The candidate will support program objectives related to Packaging Data Content products and services, including coordination of shipping requests through the LM Shipping Department and the larger Packaging, Handling, Storage, and Transportation team. This position will also support packaging design reviews, program packaging questions, root cause analysis for damaged shipments, process improvement activities, and the evaluation of new packaging techniques to improve shipping performance.

The candidate will work with program points of contact, vendors, Integrated Product Teams, customers, and shipping personnel to resolve packaging and transportation challenges. The role requires strong communication, technical documentation, teamwork, and the ability to support Good Manufacturing Practices within developed Packaging Data Content.

Required Skills
  • 1–3 years of experience supporting packaging, handling, storage, transportation, or shipping activities for program hardware, components, or system-level equipment.
  • 1–3 years of experience coordinating packaging and shipping requirements with cross-functional teams, including program IPTs, suppliers, vendors, customers, and shipping departments.
  • 1–3 years of experience interpreting or supporting compliance with transportation, packaging, and hazardous material shipping requirements, including DOT 49 CFR or related regulatory guidance.
  • 1–3 years of experience assisting with the development, review, or maintenance of Special Packaging Instructions, packaging documentation, shipping paperwork, or technical support data.
  • 1–3 years of experience supporting hazardous material identification, handling, labeling, marking, packaging, inventory, or shipment activities using SDS/MSDS information and applicable procedures.
  • 1–3 years of experience using Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, to create documentation, reports, presentations, trackers, or shipping-related records.
  • 1–3 years of experience supporting technical documentation, root cause analysis, process improvement, or corrective action activities related to damaged shipments, packaging issues, or shipping process performance.
  • 1–3 years of experience working with engineering design data, product data management systems, MCAD tools, CREO, Pro/E, or similar systems to support packaging design, Packaging Data Content, or hardware transportation requirements.
  • Ability to work onsite, support overtime as needed, and travel occasionally to support program requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships and work well in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop technical documentation and present information to internal teams, customers, or larger groups.
  • Ability to respond quickly to internal and external customer requirements while maintaining attention to detail and compliance with applicable procedures.


Desired Skills
  • Familiarity with Special Packaging Instructions used to support Initial Hazard Classification, packaging procurement, packaging fabrication, and shipment execution.
  • Familiarity with Performance Oriented Packaging testing, including test planning, coordination with test facilities, test observation, data collection, and report preparation.
  • Familiarity with Department of Transportation hazardous material regulations, including Code of Federal Regulations Title 49, Parts 171–180.
  • Familiarity with International Civil Aviation Organization Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air.
  • Familiarity with the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code for ocean shipments.
  • Familiarity with commercial packaging standards, including ASTM D3951, for protection of system equipment or hardware during shipment and storage.
  • Familiarity with military specifications, military standards, or customer-specific packaging requirements.
  • Familiarity with Radio Frequency Identification requirements or applications related to shipping, transportation, packaging, or asset tracking.
  • Familiarity with Product Data Management software, workflow processes, or Packaging Data Content development.
  • Familiarity with planning or supporting Packaging, Handling, and Storage program or technical reviews.
  • Familiarity with evaluating handling equipment requirements to ensure adequate facilities and equipment are available to handle, store, or transport system hardware.
  • Familiarity with packaging, marking, labeling, and documenting hazardous or dangerous materials as required by applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Experience supporting packaging design improvements, vendor engagement, or customer coordination to improve shipping performance and reduce damaged shipments.
  • Experience working in aerospace, defense, manufacturing, logistics, sustainment, depot operations, or a regulated technical environment.
